Dangote Refinery Surpasses U.S. in Europe Jet Fuel Exports

Nigeria’s transformation from one of the world’s largest fuel importers into a significant exporter of refined petroleum products continues to gather momentum.

The latest evidence comes from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which has overtaken the United States as Europe’s biggest supplier of jet fuel for June, according to market intelligence from S&P Global Commodity Insights.

The refinery exported approximately 466,000 metric tonnes of aviation fuel to Europe during the month. That shipment equals nearly 582.5 million litres and carries an estimated domestic value of about ₦757 billion. The achievement marks Nigeria’s highest monthly jet fuel export volume to Europe since the country became a net exporter of aviation fuel in 2024.

The figures illustrate more than strong export performance. They signal a remarkable shift in Nigeria’s role within the global energy market. For decades, the country depended heavily on imported refined petroleum products despite being one of Africa’s largest crude oil producers. Today, refined products produced on Nigerian soil are supplying major international markets.

The surge in exports also reflects changing dynamics within Europe’s aviation fuel market. Prices have retreated sharply after reaching record highs during tensions in the Middle East.

Consequently, buyers have turned to alternative suppliers capable of delivering large volumes at competitive prices.

According to S&P Global Commodity Insights, Nigerian jet fuel exports to Europe doubled from 232,000 metric tonnes in May to 466,000 metric tonnes in June. During the same period, exports from the United States declined significantly.

American shipments dropped from a record 818,000 metric tonnes in April to 560,000 metric tonnes in May before falling further to 399,000 metric tonnes in June. That decline allowed Nigeria to emerge as Europe’s leading supplier for the month.

Market participants believe the shift reflects increased refinery production across several regions. One energy trader noted that refineries postponed scheduled maintenance to capitalize on earlier high fuel prices.

As production increased in both Nigeria and the United States, additional cargoes also resumed through the Suez route from the United Arab Emirates, contributing to an oversupplied market.

While supply expanded rapidly, demand failed to keep pace. European aviation fuel prices weakened considerably as traders anticipated abundant summer inventories and softer-than-expected airline demand.

Data published by Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, showed Northwest Europe jet fuel cargo assessments falling dramatically from record levels reached earlier this year.

Even so, analysts expect the market to remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments.

Future supply could fluctuate depending on security around the Strait of Hormuz and how quickly Middle Eastern refineries recover from recent disruptions. At the same time, stronger summer travel demand and refiners shifting production toward diesel could gradually tighten aviation fuel supplies.

Nigeria’s growing export strength extends well beyond jet fuel. Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) revealed that the Dangote Refinery exported approximately 1.66 billion litres of refined petroleum products in April 2026 alone.

The exports included roughly 513 million litres of petrol, 534 million litres of diesel and 615 million litres of aviation fuel.

Those figures reinforce the refinery’s importance to Nigeria’s industrial transformation. As the country’s only major refinery producing sufficient volumes for both domestic consumption and international exports, Dangote has fundamentally changed Nigeria’s energy balance.

The refinery has already enabled Nigeria to become a net petrol exporter for the first time in decades. Earlier this year, domestic production exceeded local demand, allowing the country to export about 434 million litres of petrol in March.

Beyond the numbers lies an even bigger story. Nigeria is steadily positioning itself as a strategic refining hub for Africa while expanding its influence across international energy markets. The Dangote Refinery has become a symbol of that transition, demonstrating how large-scale industrial investment can reshape an entire nation’s economic narrative.

Although volatility in global energy markets remains, Nigeria appears increasingly prepared to benefit from changing trade routes and evolving supply chains. As Europe seeks reliable sources of refined petroleum products and global demand continues to shift, the Dangote Refinery is strengthening its position as one of the continent’s most influential industrial assets.

The refinery’s latest performance highlights more than commercial success. It reflects Nigeria’s growing capacity to compete with established global exporters, diversify foreign exchange earnings and cement its place in the international petroleum value chain.

If current production trends continue, the country could become one of the world’s most important suppliers of refined petroleum products over the coming years.
