Commonwealth Secretary-General Hon. Shirley Botchwey has used her first International Youth Day in office to deliver an inspiring message to the 1.5 billion young people across the Commonwealth, urging them to lead local actions that drive global change.
This year’s theme, “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,” reflects the energy, creativity, and transformative power of youth. In her statement, Botchwey praised young people across the 56 Commonwealth nations for turning the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into everyday realities—whether through building sustainable farms, launching climate-focused apps, mentoring peers, or even running for political office.
“You are the change, and it is our job to champion and support your journey,” Botchwey said. “One street. One school. One startup. One idea at a time, young leaders are not waiting for permission to act.”
The Secretary-General stressed that as the world approaches 2030, youth must not be left behind, emphasizing that their leadership is essential for achieving democracy, peace, prosperity, and sustainability. She called for collective action to amplify youth voices and ensure they are “not only shaping the future, but owning it.”
In celebration of International Youth Day, the Commonwealth Secretariat also announced the launch of the 2026 Commonwealth Youth Awards to recognize exceptional young leaders making an impact in their communities. Awards will be presented across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe & Canada, and the Pacific, with one individual named Commonwealth Young Person of the Year.
Nominations are open until 17 October 2025, and young changemakers are encouraged to apply or nominate others who are advancing the SDGs.
