A major shift is underway in Ghana’s mining sector as AngloGold Ashanti has signed a $66.5 million (A$95 million) transition agreement with Australian mining services company Perenti, paving the way for the South African gold producer to take direct control of mining operations at its Iduapriem gold mine.
The agreement marks the end of an eight year partnership between AngloGold Ashanti and Perenti’s subsidiary, African Mining Services (AMS), at one of Ghana’s most significant gold producing assets.
Under the transition plan, AMS, operating through its AMAX joint venture with Ghanaian partner MaxMass, will continue providing surface mining and related support services at the Iduapriem open pit mine for approximately six months before formally handing over operations to AngloGold Ashanti.
As part of the deal, AngloGold Ashanti will acquire most of the mining equipment currently owned and operated by AMS at the site. The equipment sale is expected to generate between A$30 million and A$40 million, equivalent to about US$21 million to US$28 million, providing Perenti with additional capital to support future growth opportunities.
Located near Tarkwa in Ghana’s Western Region, the Iduapriem mine remains one of AngloGold Ashanti’s most valuable African assets. The operation holds more than 2.1 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves, making it a strategic contributor to the company’s long term production portfolio.
The transition reflects AngloGold Ashanti’s broader strategy to strengthen operational oversight by bringing mining activities back under direct management. Greater control of day to day operations is expected to improve operational flexibility while supporting long term efficiency at one of its flagship mines.
For Perenti, the agreement represents a well planned exit from a successful mining services contract while creating an opportunity to unlock capital through the sale of its mining fleet.
Perenti Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Torres said the transition demonstrates the company’s strong operational track record across Africa.
She noted that the equipment sale provides certainty and allows the company to recycle capital into several value creating opportunities currently under consideration.
Perenti Contract Mining President Gabrielle Iwanow praised the AMS team for its performance over the past eight years and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to maintaining high operational standards until the transition is completed.
The transaction comes at a time when several global mining companies are reassessing how they operate across Africa. Many producers are increasingly weighing the benefits of bringing strategic assets under direct management while continuing to rely on specialist contractors where appropriate.
For AngloGold Ashanti, taking full control of mining operations at Iduapriem strengthens its position in Ghana, one of Africa’s leading gold producing nations. For Perenti, the agreement delivers fresh capital that can be redeployed into new mining contracts and expansion opportunities across the continent.
The deal also highlights continued investor confidence in Africa’s mining industry, where gold remains one of the continent’s most valuable export commodities and a key driver of economic growth.
