Ghana’s printing and visual communications industry is entering a strong expansion phase as retail growth, urban development, and advertising demand accelerate investment in modern production technology. Companies across the sector now focus on faster turnaround times, improved durability, and more versatile printing solutions to support brands competing for consumer attention.
The country’s retail market reached an estimated $32 billion in 2023 and analysts expect it to grow to $54 billion by 2031. This rapid commercial expansion continues to drive demand for high-impact signage, branded displays, and marketing materials. As a result, the Ghana print industry is becoming a key enabler of modern retail experiences.
At the same time, outdoor advertising remains a powerful growth engine for the sector. The segment generates roughly $60 million annually and represents more than 20 percent of Ghana’s total advertising expenditure. Because brands increasingly compete for visibility in malls, storefronts, public spaces, and event venues, printing companies are upgrading their production capabilities.
Accra-based Chroma Digital Solutions is one of the businesses responding to this shift. The company recently strengthened its production capacity by installing the Canon Colorado M5W wide-format printer, a move that expands its ability to deliver premium retail displays, interior décor prints, and durable outdoor signage.
This installation ranks among the earliest deployments of the technology in Africa. Consequently, it places the company in a strong position to serve the growing demand for specialised and high-value print applications across the Ghanaian market.
“In today’s competitive environment, clients expect speed, consistency, and the flexibility to handle projects ranging from interior décor to large outdoor graphics,” said Kwame Owusu-Kwarteng, Operations Manager at Chroma Digital Solutions. “The Canon Colorado M5W allows us to deliver these services from a single platform.”
He explained that the printer’s UVgel technology produces durable prints capable of withstanding intense heat and sunlight. Additionally, advanced features such as white ink printing, combined matte-and-gloss finishing, and texture printing create new premium applications that were previously difficult to produce locally.
The system also improves productivity while reducing ink consumption. These advantages are particularly important in Ghana’s price-sensitive business environment, where efficiency helps printing companies remain competitive.
According to Canon Central & North Africa, Ghana’s evolving economy is encouraging print service providers to move beyond traditional production models. Instead, many companies now focus on value-added services that support branding, retail experiences, and architectural design.
“Ghana represents one of the most dynamic visual communications markets in West Africa,” said Tushar Vashnavi, Business Unit Director for B2B at Canon Central & North Africa. “As retail, infrastructure, and advertising sectors expand, print businesses increasingly adopt technologies that help them diversify services, respond faster to customers, and improve profitability.”
He added that advanced solutions such as the Colorado M-series support this transition by combining productivity, application versatility, and long-lasting print durability.
Industry experts also highlight the importance of reliable technical support and strategic guidance when adopting new technologies. These factors play a critical role in ensuring successful implementation and sustainable growth in emerging markets like Ghana.
For Chroma Digital Solutions, the upgrade has already created new opportunities. The company can now handle more complex projects while maintaining consistent output quality.
“Having dependable support behind the technology gives us confidence to expand and pursue larger contracts,” the company representative noted. “It allows us to focus on delivering real value to our customers.”
Looking ahead, analysts expect the Ghana printing sector to benefit from broader economic diversification. Retail expansion, real estate development, corporate branding, and event marketing will likely increase demand for high-quality visual communication.
As these industries grow, technologically advanced print providers will play an increasingly central role in supporting Ghana’s evolving commercial landscape.
