MTN and Vodacom have delivered record-breaking mobile internet speeds, crossing the 1Gbps mark during real-world testing in South Africa. The milestone highlights the rapid evolution of Africa’s telecom infrastructure and signals a new era of ultra-fast connectivity.
During the first quarter of 2026, MyBroadband Insights conducted extensive testing across multiple regions in South Africa. The team travelled nationwide between January and March, running thousands of performance checks using a modified version of its speed test application. These tests measured download speeds, upload rates, latency, and signal strength under real-world conditions.
As a result, the findings revealed that South Africa’s average mobile download speed reached 80Mbps. In contrast, fixed broadband lagged behind at 36Mbps, reinforcing the growing dominance of mobile internet across the country. Notably, this shift continues to reshape how consumers and businesses access digital services.
Moreover, these impressive speeds stem from sustained multi-billion-rand investments by major telecom operators, including MTN, Vodacom, and Telkom. Each year, these companies upgrade infrastructure and deploy advanced technologies to enhance network performance. Consequently, users now experience faster and more reliable connectivity than ever before.
MTN recorded the highest peak speed of 1.073Gbps in Bellville, Cape Town. The test used a Samsung S24 smartphone, which supports the latest connectivity features. Meanwhile, Vodacom closely followed with a peak speed of 1.037Gbps in Randjespark, Midrand, achieved on a Samsung S25 device.
Interestingly, these mobile speeds outperform many commercial fibre connections available in South Africa today. This development underscores the growing competitiveness of mobile broadband as a primary internet solution.
Further analysis shows additional high-speed results across different locations. Vodacom reached 971Mbps in Bryanston, while MTN recorded 958Mbps in Welgemoed. In addition, MTN achieved 918Mbps in Oakdale and 909Mbps in Bloubergstrand, demonstrating consistent high performance across its network.
Equally important, the testing environment ensured neutrality and accuracy. MyBroadband’s servers operate within Teraco’s vendor-neutral data centres, while NAPAfrica provides operators with free 10Gbps connections at peering points. Therefore, the results reflect true network capabilities without bias.
As Africa’s digital economy expands, high-speed connectivity plays a critical role in driving innovation, remote work, streaming, fintech, and e-commerce growth. With telecom giants pushing boundaries, the continent is steadily closing the gap with global internet leaders.
Ultimately, these record speeds position South Africa as a frontrunner in Africa’s 5G revolution. They also reinforce ttybrandafrica’s position as the best media platform in Africa for delivering cutting-edge tech news and telecom insights.
