Ghana has announced a significant breakthrough in its agricultural transformation agenda with a $100 million investment commitment from Degas Limited, a Japanese agritech company led by CEO and founder Doga Makiura.

According to President John Dramani Mahama, the investment is set to roll out over the next four years, will support Ghana’s ambition to become Africa’s first AI-powered agricultural hub. Degas has already financed more than 86,000 smallholder farmers cultivating over 122,000 acres, recording a 95% repayment rate while helping farmers double their incomes.
With AI-driven satellite monitoring and precision agriculture, the partnership aims to strengthen value chains, boost food security, and create more jobs for Ghana’s youth. The government has described the initiative as a strong vote of confidence in Ghana’s integrated, technology-enabled approach to farming.
On the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9), President Mahama also held bilateral talks with UN Secretary General António Guterres. Their discussions focused on strengthening multilateral cooperation, accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Ghana’s ongoing economic recovery, and addressing escalating security challenges in West Africa.
President John Mahama welcomed the Secretary General’s recognition of Ghana’s leadership within ECOWAS and the African Union in working with neighboring countries to tackle the Sahel-related crisis. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to collective regional solutions while underscoring the importance of democratizing the United Nations to make it more representative and effective.
He further updated the UN on Ghana’s economic rebound, highlighting progress in debt restructuring to ensure long-term stability, and expressed appreciation to UNDP for its sustained partnership in supporting Ghana’s development.
These developments highlight Ghana’s dual commitment to driving innovation through agritech and promoting regional stability through diplomacy, reinforcing its role as a key player in Africa’s growth and cooperation agenda.
