Senegal won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title on Sunday night after defeating hosts Morocco in a dramatic final decided in extra time. The match, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, ended Senegal’s long campaign with their second continental crown following their first triumph in 2021.

The final featured several controversial moments, including VAR decisions, a temporary walkout by Senegal players, and a missed penalty by Morocco. Senegal appeared to take the lead in the 92nd minute when they converted a late chance inside the box. The referee ruled the goal out for a foul in the build-up. Video Assistant Referee officials did not recommend a review. Shortly after, the referee awarded Morocco a penalty following a VAR check for a separate incident in the area.
The decision sparked protests from Senegal’s players, several of whom walked toward the tunnel in disagreement with the officiating. Senegal captain Sadio Mané intervened to calm the situation. He approached his teammates and instructed them to return to the field so the match could continue. After several minutes, the players resumed the game. Morocco’s Brahim Díaz took the penalty but missed the attempt, sending the ball wide of the target.
The match moved into extra time following the missed spot kick. Senegal secured the decisive goal early in the additional period through midfielder Pape Gueye, who finished from close range after a build-up from the right flank. Morocco pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but failed to convert their chances.
The victory gives Senegal their second Africa Cup of Nations trophy and confirms their status among the continent’s leading national teams. For Morocco, the defeat marked another missed opportunity to win the competition on home soil. Tournament officials have not yet commented on the officiating decisions that dominated discussions after the final whistle.
