
Ghana Confers Highest State Honour on Indian PM Narendra Modi During Official Visit
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a historic two-day official visit to Ghana, marking the first visit by an Indian head of government to the West African nation in over 30 years. The visit, described as a pivotal moment in strengthening bilateral ties, was hosted by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and focused on deepening cooperation between the two countries across key sectors including trade, defence, energy, and digital innovation.

During his arrival in Accra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly welcomed and received with full diplomatic honours. In a ceremony of national significance, President Mahama conferred on him Ghana’s highest civilian honour, the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana. The award is in recognition of his distinguished global leadership and commitment to building strong Ghana-India relations. President Mahama described the moment as a symbol of shared respect and mutual aspirations between the two countries.
In a statement following the honour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep appreciation to the people and Government of Ghana, dedicating the award to the youth of both nations and the enduring cultural and historical bonds shared by India and Ghana. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to stand with Ghana as a reliable partner in development and innovation.
During bilateral discussions, both leaders agreed to elevate the Ghana-India relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership. Talks centred on expanding trade and economic ties, with special attention to collaboration in fintech, skill development, digital infrastructure, healthcare, and education. The two countries also explored cooperation in critical minerals, clean energy, defence and maritime security, areas with strategic value for the economic growth of both nations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the talks as extremely fruitful and emphasized that the enhanced partnership would bring tangible benefits to the citizens of both countries. He noted that India sees immense potential in working closely with Ghana, especially in advancing technology-driven solutions and youth empowerment initiatives. Cultural diplomacy was also highlighted, with plans to boost cultural exchanges and tourism between India and Ghana.
