Nigerian Innovator Oluwatobi Oyinlola Breaks Guinness World Record With World’s Smallest GPS Tracker

A young Nigerian tech innovator, Oluwatobi Oyinlola, has officially set a new Guinness World Recordfor creating the world’s smallest GPS tracking device, marking a major breakthrough in miniaturized technology and positioning Nigeria at the forefront of global innovation.

The device, measuring just 22.93 mm x 11.92 mm, is roughly the size of a SIM card and is being celebrated as a groundbreaking achievement with vast potential across industries such as logistics, health, security, and smart devices.

Oyinlola, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, was born and raised in Ibadan, southwest Nigeria. His invention has already attracted global attention and is being hailed as a symbol of Africa’s rising tech potential.

In a statement from the Guinness World Records, Oyinlola was praised for “pushing the boundaries of what’s possible” and for contributing significantly to the development of compact, high-performance tech products.

Reacting to the news, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulated Oyinlola in a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling the invention a source of national pride.

“Congratulations, Oluwatobi, on this feat. You have just shown the world that Nigerian youth can!” Tinubu wrote. “His work is not just a personal achievement but a national inspiration. It demonstrates that with the right support, Nigerian youth can lead the world in innovation and technology.”

The President further emphasized the importance of investing in local talent and creating opportunities for Nigerian innovators to thrive.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, also responded to the announcement, describing Oyinlola as a beacon of “extraordinary potential within our ecosystem.”

“Oluwatobi’s success reinforces our mission to empower more young innovators and position Nigeria as a global force in emerging technologies,” Tijani stated.

The new GPS tracking device is expected to inspire future applications in smart devices, wearable tech, transportation monitoring, and personal security systems, potentially revolutionizing how people and assets are tracked worldwide.
