Tony Elumelu Takes the Helm at Seplat Energy

Tony Elumelu has secured another influential leadership role in corporate Africa after Seplat Energy Plc announced his election as the company’s incoming Chairman, effective January 1, 2027.

The appointment positions one of Africa’s most respected business leaders at the helm of Nigeria’s leading indigenous energy company as it prepares for a new phase of expansion, operational growth, and long-term value creation.

Seplat Energy disclosed that Elumelu will succeed Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, CON, who will retire from the board on December 31, 2026, after serving as Independent Chairman since April 2024.

The transition marks one of the most significant boardroom changes in Nigeria’s energy industry in recent years.

Elumelu joined the Seplat Energy Board in January 2026 and brings decades of experience in banking, energy, investment, and entrepreneurship. As Founder and Chairman of Heirs Holdings, which owns approximately 20.07 percent of Seplat Energy, he has played a prominent role in advancing indigenous participation across Africa’s strategic sectors.

His election arrives at a pivotal moment for Seplat Energy. The company continues to strengthen its position as a leading indigenous energy producer while maintaining a dual listing on the Premium Board of the Nigerian Exchange Limited and the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange.

Globally recognized for championing Africapitalism, Elumelu has consistently advocated for private-sector-led economic development across Africa.

His philosophy emphasizes long-term investments capable of generating both financial returns and social impact, making his appointment particularly significant for investors watching the future direction of Africa’s energy industry.

Speaking on the appointment, Elumelu expressed gratitude to the board and confidence in the company’s future trajectory.

“I am honoured to succeed Senator Udoma as Chairman in January 2027 and to lead the Board through Seplat’s next phase of growth. I firmly believe in the critical role indigenous resources play in the economic transformation of Nigeria and Africa, and Seplat’s culture of execution and governance aligns strongly with my own values.”

He also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing leadership while emphasizing his commitment to creating greater value for shareholders.

“I thank Senator Udoma and Roger for their stewardship and look forward to delivering further value for shareholders. I also congratulate Mr. Okon on his appointment as Chief Executive Officer. His deep industry experience gives me great confidence that Seplat is well positioned for its next chapter of growth.”

Alongside the chairmanship transition, Seplat Energy announced the appointment of Effiong Okon as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director. Industry observers view the dual leadership changes as a strategic move designed to strengthen the company’s operational execution and governance framework.

The leadership transition reinforces Seplat Energy’s ambition to remain a dominant force in Africa’s evolving energy landscape.

With Elumelu’s extensive investment experience, global business network, and track record of building successful enterprises, investors will closely monitor how the company navigates emerging opportunities across Nigeria and the broader African energy market.

For shareholders, industry stakeholders, and market analysts, the appointment signals continuity, confidence, and a renewed focus on growth. More importantly, it highlights the increasing influence of indigenous business leaders in shaping the future of Africa’s energy sector.

As Seplat Energy prepares for 2027, Tony Elumelu’s election as Chairman stands as a defining moment for the company and a powerful statement about the growing role of African-owned institutions in driving the continent’s economic transformation.
