Michael Sets New Japanese Box Office Record Global Earnings $1 Billion

The global box office success of Michael continues to gather momentum, with the blockbuster biopic achieving another historic milestone in Japan.

Just 41 days after its June 12 release, Michael has generated ¥6.63 billion, approximately $41 million, while attracting more than 4.17 million moviegoers across Japan. The achievement makes it the highest grossing film ever released exclusively by a Japanese independent distributor.

The record belongs to Kino Films, whose distribution of Michael has outperformed every previous independently distributed title in Japanese box office history. The accomplishment highlights the growing commercial strength of independent film distribution when paired with globally recognized content.

The film debuted in 390 cinemas nationwide and earned more than ¥1.09 billion during its opening weekend. It also delivered the biggest opening weekend for a live action foreign film released in Japan in 2026.

Its impressive momentum continued as Michael remained the country’s number one film for three consecutive weeks before holding a place among the Top 3 highest grossing films through its sixth week. The sustained audience demand reflects the enduring appeal of Michael Jackson’s legacy and the film’s broad international reach.

The latest achievement in Japan comes as Michael continues breaking records around the world. The film has now generated more than $1.01 billion at the global box office, making it the highest grossing music biopic and the highest grossing biographical film ever released.

In reaching the milestone, Michael has overtaken the lifetime global earnings of Bohemian Rhapsody and Oppenheimer, cementing its place as one of the most successful biographical films in cinema history.

For cinema operators, distributors, and investors, the performance of Michael demonstrates the continued commercial value of premium theatrical releases driven by globally recognized entertainment brands. It also reinforces Japan’s position as one of the world’s most influential international box office markets.

With audiences continuing to fill cinemas across Japan, Michael shows no signs of slowing down, adding another landmark achievement to an extraordinary global box office run.
