More than a decade after its release, The Essential Michael Jackson has reached an extraordinary milestone by spending 550 weeks on the Billboard 200, reinforcing the King of Pop’s enduring influence on the global music industry.
The achievement comes after a remarkable resurgence in Jackson’s catalog during the spring of 2026. Interest in his music surged following the release of Michael, the blockbuster biographical film that has become the highest grossing musical biopic in history. The film has introduced Jackson’s music to a new generation while inspiring longtime fans to revisit his greatest hits.
Although streaming momentum has begun to normalize as the movie’s theatrical run winds down, Jackson’s catalog continues to dominate major music charts, highlighting the timeless appeal of one of the world’s most celebrated entertainers.
This week, The Essential Michael Jackson slipped from No. 152 to No. 175 on the Billboard 200, the industry’s leading albums ranking, which measures album consumption through physical sales, digital purchases, and streaming activity.
Despite the decline, the compilation’s latest chart appearance marks a historic achievement. The album has now spent 550 weeks on the Billboard 200, making it only the second Michael Jackson release to cross that milestone.
The only Jackson album with a longer run is Thriller, which has now accumulated 726 weeks on the Billboard 200. Widely regarded as one of the bestselling albums in music history, Thriller continues to set benchmarks decades after its original release.
Interestingly, The Essential Michael Jackson was never among Jackson’s highest charting releases. The compilation debuted on the Billboard 200 in August 2005 and did not reach its highest position until September 2018, when it climbed to No. 31.
The collection continues to resonate with audiences because it brings together many of Jackson’s signature songs in one album, making it a popular entry point for both new listeners and lifelong fans.
Elsewhere on this week’s Billboard rankings, The Essential Michael Jackson also slipped from No. 21 to No. 24 on the Top R&B Albums chart. Even so, the album has now spent 379 weeks on that chart, underscoring its remarkable staying power within the R&B genre.
Jackson remains a dominant presence across Billboard’s album rankings. Thriller continues to perform exceptionally well, easing one place to No. 8 on the Billboard 200 while remaining inside the Top 10. Another greatest hits collection, Number Ones, also remains a strong performer despite falling from No. 8 to No. 12.
Both Thriller and Number Ones continue to appear across six Billboard rankings, including the Billboard 200, Top Album Sales, Top Streaming Albums, Vinyl Albums, Top R&B Hip Hop Albums, and Top R&B Albums.
Jackson’s classic studio albums Bad and Off the Wall also continue to attract strong demand. While neither appears on the Billboard 200 this week, both remain among the bestselling releases on the Top Album Sales and Vinyl Albums charts.
On the Vinyl Albums ranking, Jackson claims four Top 10 positions, demonstrating the continued popularity of his catalog among collectors and music enthusiasts.
For the global music business, Jackson’s latest chart milestone reflects the lasting commercial value of iconic catalogs. Long after their original release, classic albums continue to generate substantial revenue through streaming, vinyl sales, licensing, and renewed interest driven by films and digital platforms.
As music consumption evolves, Michael Jackson’s catalog remains one of the strongest examples of how timeless artistry can continue creating commercial success across generations.
