Michael Movie Nears $800 Million Globally, Closing In on Record as Highest-Grossing Music Biopic Ever

The global success of Michael continues to grow at an unstoppable pace as the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic races toward the historic $800 million milestone at the worldwide box office.

According to reports from Variety, the blockbuster film has now earned more than $788 million globally, making it one of the biggest cinema releases of 2026 and one of the most successful music biopics in movie history. The film pulled in another $28.5 million overseas during the latest weekend run, pushing its international total to $468 million, while domestic earnings climbed to $319 million.

Industry analysts believe the film could soon surpass Bohemian Rhapsody, which closed its theatrical run with $911 million worldwide. If that happens, Michael will officially become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time.

The movie still has a major market left to conquer. Japan, one of Michael Jackson’s strongest global fan bases, will not receive the film until June 12. That release could provide the final push needed to break the long-standing record.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the movie stars Jaafar Jackson in a breakout performance as Michael Jackson. The cast also features Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.

Since arriving in theaters on April 24, the film has dominated conversations across entertainment and pop culture spaces. Fans have praised the emotional storytelling, nostalgic performances, and the recreation of iconic moments from Michael Jackson’s legendary career.

The story follows Jackson’s rise from a gifted child performer in the The Jackson 5 to becoming one of the most influential entertainers in history. The movie explores his early fame, creative ambition, family struggles, and the intense pressure that shaped his journey toward global superstardom.

Unlike many recent music biopics, Michael connects strongly with audiences across multiple generations. Older fans return for nostalgia, while younger viewers discover the late superstar’s influence through the cinematic experience. That wide appeal continues to drive massive ticket sales worldwide.

The movie has already crushed the lifetime earnings of Elvis, which earned over $288 million globally. Now, all eyes remain on whether Michael can rewrite box office history completely.

Meanwhile, excitement continues to build after Lionsgate executives confirmed that a sequel is already in development. The first movie mainly focuses on Jackson’s childhood fame, the Jackson 5 era, and the beginning of his solo career. However, the sequel will likely explore the peak years that transformed him into the King of Pop and one of the most recognizable entertainers the world has ever seen.

With global momentum still rising, strong international demand, and Japan yet to open, Michael may soon deliver one of the biggest achievements ever recorded for a music-based film franchise.
