Hollywood studio giant Lionsgate is moving aggressively toward a sequel to its blockbuster Michael Jackson biopic as excitement continues to build around the global success of Michael.
Speaking during the company’s quarterly earnings call, Lionsgate Motion Picture Chair Adam Fogelson revealed that conversations surrounding Michael 2 are progressing “exceptionally well,” signaling strong confidence inside the studio about expanding the King of Pop’s cinematic story.
According to Fogelson, the first film only scratched the surface of Michael Jackson’s legendary career and cultural impact. He explained that several defining moments from Jackson’s life and music catalog never appeared in the original movie, creating room for a larger and more emotionally layered sequel.
The studio believes audiences worldwide still want more insight into the global superstar whose music reshaped pop culture forever. Because of that, Lionsgate plans to explore new timelines, unseen career moments, and additional personal stories that fans have waited years to see on screen.
Fogelson also stressed that the creative team can move both forward and backward through Jackson’s story. As a result, the sequel may revisit overlooked moments from the same timeline while also exploring new eras from the entertainer’s historic rise to fame.
“We’re very, very confident that we’ve got an incredibly entertaining movie that will appeal once again to a global audience as the pieces come together,” Fogelson said.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer expressed optimism about the first film’s commercial performance. He noted that Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson as his famous uncle, could become the studio’s first movie to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
That projection alone highlights the enormous commercial power surrounding Michael Jackson’s legacy decades after his peak dominance in music and entertainment. It also reinforces why Hollywood studios continue investing heavily in music biopics tied to globally recognized stars.
In another major revelation, Fogelson confirmed that nearly 25% to 30% of Michael 2 has already been filmed during previous production activity. Consequently, the sequel may move faster into full development than many expected. The pre-shot material could also help reduce production costs while maintaining the large cinematic scale Lionsgate wants for the franchise.
Still, the executive made it clear that the studio will not compromise on quality. Instead, Lionsgate plans to deliver another “big and satisfying movie” designed for international audiences and longtime Michael Jackson fans alike.
The film also stars Nia Long and Colman Domingo. The story follows Michael Jackson’s journey from his early breakthrough with the Jackson 5 to his transformation into one of the most influential entertainers in modern history.
As anticipation grows, industry analysts already expect Michael 2 to become one of the most talked-about entertainment releases in global cinema. The combination of untold stories, legendary music, nostalgia, and worldwide fan loyalty continues to position the franchise as a major Hollywood event.
For music lovers, movie audiences, and pop culture fans across Africa and beyond, the Michael Jackson story remains larger than entertainment. It represents ambition, reinvention, fame, pressure, creativity, and cultural influence at the highest level.
