Namibia has approved TotalEnergies’ acquisition of operatorship of Galp Energia’s giant Mopane discovery in the Orange Basin, marking another major milestone in the country’s emergence as one of the world’s most promising offshore oil frontiers.
The approval clears the way for TotalEnergies to assume operatorship of the highly prospective Mopane complex from Portugal’s Galp Energia. As part of the agreement, Galp will also acquire a minority stake in TotalEnergies’ landmark Venus development, strengthening collaboration between the two energy companies as exploration and development activities accelerate offshore Namibia.
The transaction reflects growing confidence in Namibia’s offshore petroleum sector, where a series of significant discoveries over the past few years have attracted global energy giants and intensified international investment interest.
For TotalEnergies, the acquisition expands its strategic footprint in the Orange Basin, a region widely regarded as one of the most exciting new hydrocarbon provinces worldwide. The French energy company already leads the development of the massive Venus discovery and will now oversee another high potential asset through the Mopane operatorship.
The deal also reinforces Galp Energia’s long term commitment to Namibia. By exchanging operatorship for a minority interest in the Venus project, the Portuguese energy company retains exposure to one of Africa’s largest emerging offshore developments while partnering on assets expected to shape the country’s future energy industry.
Namibia has rapidly positioned itself as a key destination for global oil and gas investment. Successive offshore discoveries have transformed investor sentiment, creating opportunities for infrastructure development, employment, government revenue, and broader economic growth.
Industry observers believe the government’s approval sends another positive signal to international investors by demonstrating continued support for responsible resource development and long term partnerships with leading global energy companies.
As exploration progresses and development plans move forward, the Orange Basin is expected to play an increasingly important role in Africa’s energy landscape, with TotalEnergies and Galp Energia among the companies leading the next phase of Namibia’s offshore energy expansion.
