MTN Nigeria Compensation for Poor Network Service: NCC Orders Refunds

MTN Nigeria has confirmed it will compensate subscribers affected by poor network performance after a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), while also rolling out fresh investments aimed at strengthening service quality across the country.

The telecom giant said the decision follows regulatory action targeting operators that failed to meet quality-of-service benchmarks between November and January. The NCC ordered operators to compensate users in affected areas, especially where network disruptions fell below acceptable standards.

MTN Nigeria acknowledged the directive and said it aligns with the regulator’s push to place consumers at the centre of telecom operations. The company emphasized that subscribers remain its top priority as it works to improve digital connectivity across Africa’s largest mobile market.

The operator explained that all customers in affected locations will receive compensation in line with the regulatory framework. It also assured subscribers that it will implement the directive fully and transparently.

Beyond compensation, MTN Nigeria shifted focus to long-term improvements. The company announced plans to accelerate capital expenditure, strengthen network infrastructure, and upgrade critical equipment to handle rising voice and data demand.

It added that it will reinforce network resilience against outages caused by environmental factors and third-party disruptions. In addition, MTN said it will deepen collaboration with tower infrastructure partners to improve uptime and service stability.

The telecom provider admitted that broader industry challenges, including infrastructure gaps and external disruptions, continue to affect service delivery. However, it stressed that it remains committed to working closely with regulators and stakeholders to resolve these issues.

Over the years, MTN has faced increased scrutiny from regulators over service quality concerns, especially as Nigeria’s demand for mobile data continues to surge rapidly. At the same time, the NCC has stepped up enforcement across the sector to push operators toward better performance and stronger consumer protection.
