BTS delivered one of the biggest moments at the 2026 American Music Awards after securing Artist of the Year and extending the global dominance of K-pop on the world stage. Meanwhile, pop superstar Taylor Swift endured a rare awards-night disappointment after going home empty-handed despite leading the nominations with eight nods.
The 52nd American Music Awards lit up the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Monday night with no single artist dominating the ceremony. Instead, seven acts shared the spotlight with three wins each, proving how competitive the global music industry has become in 2026.
BTS emerged as one of the night’s biggest winners after claiming Artist of the Year for the second time in their career. The global K-pop icons also won Song of the Summer for “Swim” and Best Male K-Pop Artist, pushing their career American Music Awards tally to 14. The achievement places BTS behind only Alabama among groups and duos in AMA history.
Even with her shocking shutout, Taylor Swift still holds the record as the most awarded artist in American Music Awards history with 40 wins. However, the 2026 ceremony marked one of the rare occasions where the pop icon failed to convert any of her nominations into victories.
Justin Bieber also strengthened his awards legacy after winning Best Male Pop Artist. The victory pushed Bieber to 19 career AMAs, tying him with late country legend Kenny Rogers as the second most-awarded male artist in AMA history. Only Michael Jackson remains ahead with 24 wins.
Global girl group KATSEYE enjoyed a breakthrough night after winning New Artist of the Year, Best Music Video and Breakthrough Pop Artist. Their victory continued the dominance of female acts in the category, which has now produced seven consecutive female winners.
The success story of the night also included HUNTR/X, whose hit song “Golden” captured Song of the Year. The track already earned major victories at both the Grammys and the Oscars earlier this year. HUNTR/X also secured Best Vocal Performance and Best Pop Song, cementing their position as one of the hottest names in global music.
Rising rock artist Sombr surprised many industry watchers after winning Best Rock/Alternative Album for I Barely Know Her. The album peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200, yet still defeated several chart-topping competitors. Sombr also won Best Rock/Alternative Song and Breakthrough Rock/Alternative Artist.
Elsewhere, Bruno Mars dominated the R&B categories with wins for Best Male R&B Artist, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album. Cardi B swept the hip-hop categories after winning Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Best Hip-Hop Song and Best Hip-Hop Album. Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter also celebrated a major night after taking home Album of the Year, Best Female Pop Artist and Best Pop Album.
Despite strong expectations, several highly nominated stars left the ceremony empty-handed. Olivia Dean failed to secure a win despite seven nominations, while Lady Gaga and songwriter Diane Warren also went winless after receiving six nominations each.
Latin music star Karol G captured Best Latin Album with Tropicoqueta and also earned the International Artist Award of Excellence. Her project defeated several major contenders, including Rosalía’s highly anticipated Lux.
Rock duo Twenty One Pilots continued their impressive AMA run after winning Best Rock/Alternative Artist for the second consecutive year and the fourth time overall. Only Linkin Park has won the category more times.
The ceremony also introduced the new Best Throwback Song category, which went to The Black Eyed Peas for “Rock That Body,” reviving nostalgia for one of the group’s biggest dance hits.
Entertainment icon Queen Latifah hosted the star-studded ceremony, which aired on CBS and streamed on Paramount+. The American Music Awards remain one of the world’s biggest fan-voted music events, with winners determined through streaming numbers, radio airplay, sales, tour grosses and fan engagement data tracked by Billboard and Luminate.
The 2026 AMAs once again proved the growing power of global fan communities, especially in K-pop, Latin music and streaming-driven pop culture. BTS’ massive victory also highlighted how international acts continue reshaping the global music business and dominating award shows once controlled mainly by American artists.
