Cristiano Ronaldo has spent more than two decades rewriting football history. On Friday night, the Portugal captain added another unforgettable chapter.
After facing criticism following Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner responded the only way he knows how—by scoring goals.
The 41-year-old struck twice in Portugal’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, becoming the first player in football history to score in six different FIFA World Cups. His achievement strengthened an already remarkable legacy and reminded the football world why he remains one of the sport’s greatest competitors.
Ronaldo wasted little time making his statement. Just six minutes into the match, he connected brilliantly with João Cancelo’s cross to fire home a superb half-volley that immediately settled Portugal’s nerves. Moments later, he doubled his tally after latching onto Bruno Fernandes’ perfectly timed through ball before calmly finishing.
The veteran forward nearly completed a first-half hat-trick, but Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov cleared another effort off the goal line.
As the final whistle approached, Ronaldo walked toward a television camera, looked directly into the lens and shouted, “I’m back!”
The celebration carried a deeper meaning.
After the match, Ronaldo explained that his message targeted those who questioned whether he still belonged on football’s biggest stage.
“I’m very happy, but the most important thing is what the team achieved,” Ronaldo said.
“Personal records are always special, but my priority has always been helping Portugal reach its objectives. I only said it so people don’t forget what I’ve been doing for 23 years.”
His comments reflected the mentality that has defined his legendary career. Despite winning almost every major trophy available, Ronaldo continues chasing new milestones with the same determination that launched him into global superstardom.
Portugal also received goals from Nuno Mendes, substitute Rafael Leão and benefited from an own goal by Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov to record one of the biggest victories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The commanding performance completely transformed the mood inside Portugal’s camp after days of criticism following the opening draw.
Portugal manager Roberto Martínez praised Ronaldo’s leadership throughout a challenging week.
He admitted criticism surrounding the national team had become louder than expected but said the captain never lost focus.
According to Martínez, Ronaldo’s experience helped unite the dressing room and inspired the squad to respond with one of their best performances of the tournament.
“Our captain is an icon,” Martínez said.
“He is playing in his sixth World Cup. Every day he works to improve, leads by example and sets standards for everyone around him.”
Football legends also applauded Ronaldo’s latest masterpiece.
Former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney described the performance as extraordinary, especially considering Ronaldo’s age.
Rooney noted that while other stars had dominated headlines during the tournament, Ronaldo once again proved that criticism often fuels his greatest performances.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane went even further.
“Cristiano Ronaldo was never gone,” Keane said.
“He is a doubted genius. He keeps proving people wrong because scoring goals is the hardest job in football, and he continues doing it.”
Even Uzbekistan coach Fabio Cannavaro, himself a World Cup-winning captain, praised Ronaldo’s longevity.
Cannavaro said football fans should appreciate witnessing a player who remains among the world’s elite at 41 years old.
The latest milestone also reignites one of football’s greatest rivalries.
Both Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have now appeared in every FIFA World Cup since 2006. Messi remains the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 18 goals, while Ronaldo has now reached double figures and added another unprecedented record to his remarkable résumé by becoming the first player ever to score in six separate editions.
More importantly for Portugal, the victory keeps their World Cup hopes firmly alive.
