Tyra Banks Sues Netflix Over America’s Next Top Model Documentary

Supermodel and entrepreneur Tyra Banks has taken legal action against Netflix, accusing the streaming giant of defamation over its documentary series about America’s Next Top Model.

Banks filed a lawsuit claiming that the three-part docuseries, Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, created what she describes as a false and damaging image of her role as the show’s host, judge, and executive producer.

According to the lawsuit, Banks alleges that the documentary used selective editing and removed important context to present a misleading version of events surrounding the long-running fashion reality competition.

The legal filing states that the documentary created a narrative suggesting Banks ignored allegations involving a former contestant and used the situation to increase ratings. Banks strongly denies those claims, calling the portrayal a “complete fabrication.”

The lawsuit argues that Netflix presented viewers with an edited storyline that did not accurately reflect Banks’ interview responses or intentions when she agreed to participate in the project.

Banks said she joined the documentary because she wanted an open conversation about America’s Next Top Model, including both the show’s cultural impact and criticism surrounding some of its past decisions.

The model and businesswoman claimed she spent more than three hours providing an interview, but only a small portion of her comments appeared in the final documentary. Her legal team alleges that approximately 16 minutes of footage were used and edited in a way that changed the meaning of her statements.

The lawsuit states that Banks wanted audiences to hear her take responsibility for certain aspects of the series while also discussing the show’s achievements and influence on the fashion and entertainment industries.

The controversy centers around the documentary’s examination of several disputed moments from America’s Next Top Model’s 24-season run, including accusations from a former contestant who claimed producers failed to protect her during filming.

However, Banks argues that the documentary unfairly connected her to those allegations and created a damaging public perception that does not represent her actions or views.

The lawsuit also claims the controversy has affected Banks’ business interests, including her ice cream brand SMiZE & DREAM. According to the filing, online ratings for the Australian-based company declined after the documentary’s release.
