South Africa Breaks Guinness World Record with Massive Pet Food Donation

South Africa has made global headlines after setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest donation of pet food within a 24-hour period.

The milestone was achieved at the Bloemfontein Show through a powerful collaboration between Petshop Science and Montego Pet Nutrition.

Organisers collected 67,200kg of pet food during the record attempt.

This total far exceeded the previous record of 36,750kg set in the United States in 2023. The event ran from Friday, May 1 at 5:00 PM to Saturday, May 2 at 5:00 PM, and officials from Guinness World Records verified every stage of the process before confirming the final figure.

The campaign drew strong public support at the popular agricultural and entertainment event.

As a result, thousands of pet lovers contributed to the initiative. Guinness officials observed the donations directly to ensure accuracy and transparency throughout the 24-hour drive.

Petshop Science confirmed that the donated food will go to eight registered animal welfare organisations in the Free State.

Additional supplies will also reach shelters in other provinces across South Africa. Leaders from both brands emphasized that the impact matters more than the record itself, especially for struggling animal rescue groups.

Trevor Paxton, General Manager of Petshop Science, said the achievement reflects what happens when communities unite for a cause. He added that the real value lies in the support given to animals in need across the country.

Montego Pet Nutrition Managing Director Johan van Jaarsveld also highlighted the importance of the initiative.

He said the partnership helped shine a spotlight on the dedication of animal rescue organisations that often work under difficult conditions. He added that the commitment continues beyond the record itself.

In addition to the Guinness achievement, Petshop Science donated R3.3 million worth of pet food and accessories to 35 animal welfare organisations across South Africa in the past financial year.

Since its launch in 2021, the brand has expanded rapidly to 174 stores nationwide, reaching all nine provinces, including through its partnership with Checkers Sixty60.

Petshop Science, founded by the Shoprite Group, continues to position itself as a leader in affordable pet care.

The brand offers private-label pet food for dogs and cats, developed with a focus on balanced nutrition and natural ingredients.

The company also states that its products support long-term pet health through added dietary fibre, prebiotics, and probiotics.

In November 2025, it introduced an upgraded range developed with veterinarians and animal nutritionists, offering complete meals made from natural ingredients.

The pet food range is locally produced and packaged in 100% recyclable bags.

It includes options for puppies, adult dogs, large breeds, and senior dogs. Cat owners also have access to kitten and adult formulas with over 30% protein content.

Petshop Science continues to expand its mission of making premium pet nutrition more accessible. According to the company, its goal is to ensure quality pet care is no longer a luxury but a standard for every household.

It also highlights its commitment to local production, environmental responsibility, and improved pet wellbeing across South Africa.
