Tanzania has taken another bold step to strengthen its tourism industry after appointing former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand as a voluntary ambassador for the country’s natural resources and tourism sector.
The announcement came after Tanzania’s Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ashatu Kijaji, met Ferdinand in Arusha and presented him with a special certificate recognizing his new role in promoting Tanzania’s tourism attractions globally.
Dr Kijaji described Ferdinand’s visit as a huge opportunity for Tanzania’s tourism industry.
She explained that the football icon’s massive international influence could expose millions of people to the country’s wildlife, beaches, culture and safari destinations.
According to the minister, Ferdinand commands more than 20 million followers across his social media platforms.
As a result, Tanzania expects stronger global visibility, especially among sports fans and luxury travel audiences searching for African tourism destinations online.
“Recognizing the importance of Rio’s visit to the country, we have come up with this certificate today and are appointing him as the Voluntary Ambassador for Tourism in Tanzania,” Dr Kijaji said during the meeting.
The government also praised the tourism-driven international campaigns championed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Officials say the administration’s aggressive tourism promotion strategy continues to deliver strong economic results for the East African nation.
Dr Kijaji revealed that Tanzania has already welcomed approximately 5.9 million tourists, while tourism revenue has climbed to 4.4 billion US dollars.
The figures further position Tanzania among Africa’s fastest-growing travel destinations in 2026.
Meanwhile, Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, applauded the tourism ministry for securing Ferdinand’s support.
He described the partnership as another strategic move capable of increasing international tourism awareness and investment opportunities in Tanzania.
Ferdinand’s appointment arrives at a time when several African countries continue to leverage celebrity influence, sports partnerships and digital campaigns to attract global tourists.
Tanzania, home to Mount Kilimanjaro, Serengeti National Park and Zanzibar’s beaches, has intensified its branding efforts to compete with leading tourism markets worldwide.
Industry observers believe Ferdinand’s endorsement could significantly increase online searches linked to Tanzania safaris, luxury African vacations and wildlife tourism experiences.
His involvement may also inspire more European travelers to consider East Africa as a premium holiday destination.
The partnership further strengthens Tanzania’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s most marketable tourism brands, especially as global travel interest in African experiences continues to rise.
